Breaking Free of Stereotypes Essay - 529 Words

Stereotype has become the new fashion of labeling groups and an easier way to identify a minority group by ones opinion. Judith Ortiz Cofer, author of â€Å"The Myth of the Latin Woman: I just met a girl named Maria† and Eric Liu, author of â€Å"Notes of a Native Speaker† escaped from any label that will shadow their minority group as a way to show others that it is possible to become themselves, rather than what society has labeled their minority group. Stereotype is not anything else other than expressions and opinions that have accumulated in past and present years. No one should ever be satisfied with their minority label, but should try to brake-free and be one in a million instead of a million in one. Both Cofer and Liu distance†¦show more content†¦People that are in minority groups tend to try to be what society has cited them as, but there is a time in life where people just need to brake-free from any comfortable oppressions that might have been an easier way to fit in a group. â€Å"If Asians were reputed to be math and science geeks, I would be a student of history and politics,† (262) Liu stated this as a way to show others that no one should follow the crowd, but it’s own self. It could have been really comfortable and easy for Liu to stay as a math and science geek and make fortune out of it; instead he took another path that in the future took him to Capitol Hill. Braking-free from stereotype can be like taking a shower after a seven day no shower camp. Why is it so hard to believe that minority groups can become the new majority? As if saying that only Mexicans eat tacos with jalapenos and a bottle of Jarritos? That has become a new way to stereotype Mexicans, and using food to identify a minority. Other majorities can eat this delicious meal, and enjoy it the same way as a Mexican. I frankly find it very disrespectful for some one to identify a minority by saying some sort of food. As a Mexican I feel as if people where comparing me with a sealed Progresso soup, which it’s known for its label As we grow up, we start to realize how wrong it is to be stereotyped and to stereotype others and how offensive it can be.
